A Study on Development in Evaluation Method of Speaking Ability in Test of Korean Language

The purpose of this study is to develop a method of evaluating speaking ability as a sub-study of a research on development in ToKL(Test of Korean Language) for evaluating people's Korean language ability. This study aims to suggest a tentative plan for the evaluation method based on the results by designing the evaluation draft and performing the experimental evaluation after examining a case of evaluating the speaking ability along with a preceding research on evaluating the speaking ability. The following are the directions of this study on development in a method of evaluating the speaking ability. - It evaluates the speaking activity that was performed in a place of test, not the paper test on knowledge or method on speaking. - It seeks for a method available for large-scale evaluation as well as being available even for loyally evaluating the speaking ability. - It develops a proper evaluation method for a speaking type. - It carries out the simulation evaluation in addition to a theoretical research. The evaluation method of speaking, which was developed in this study, was limited to presentation and interview that are being highlighted most importantly as the ability of practical affairs in modern society. Presentation and interview are common in a sense of speaking that is performed in the public place. However, there is difference in a sense that the presentation is unilateral speaking targeting the audience and that the interview is the mutual speaking, which is made question and answer with interviewee. The presentation ability was allowed to be evaluated with the focus on selection, composition, and delivery of contents. Next, the interview is activity of forming and adjusting own speaking in relation to the contents of other person's speech. Thus, the interview was focused on measuring ability of listening to and understanding the contents of question, and of answering in line with a request in a question. To suggest a tentative plan for a method of evaluating the speaking ability, this study first performed theoretical research, and carried out the experimental evaluation based on this. The following are the detailed research tasks on which this study focused. - Establishment of evaluation goal - Confirmation of evaluation contents - Establishment of evaluation criteria and evaluation item - Evaluation index and data collection - Establishment of evaluation standard The following are the conclusions that were suggested in this study on these tasks. - Korean-language speaking ability test take aim at making a diagnosis of an individual's speaking ability. - Korean-language speaking ability test has Korean-language speaking ability(compositional ability, expression ability, performance ability) as the evaluation contents.
