This study is for researching the actual use of low-dignity words in television dramas broadcasted in 2012. The specific period of monitoring them for this research is five months in total, from May to September in 2012, and the total amount of the research expense is ￦35,736,360. The numbers of research members for this project are five in total: one senior researcher, one co-researcher, two research assistants, and one assistant. Focusing mainly on weekend dramas, Monday & Tuesday dramas and Wednesday & Thursday dramas of three terrestrial broadcasting companies (KBS, SBS, MBC) and four general programming TV channels (MBN, JTBC, TV Chosun, Channel A) were monitored to find the actual uses of low-dignity words in television dramas of 2012. The numbers of the broadcasted episodes which are monitored by this research project are 240 in total and their running time is 15,001 minutes which are equivalent to 250 hours 1 minute. In the study of actual uses of low-dignity words in television drama, 4064 low-dignity expressions were discovered in 10 categories, such as ‘non-standard expressions (non-standard language, non-standard grammar)’, ‘vulgar expressions (expressions insulting personality, discriminative expressions, violent expressions, unnecessary foreign words & loanwords, argot & chatting language, coarse expressions, lewd expressions)’, etc. Low-dignity words were used 16.93 times per one episode and 2.71 times per 10 minutes. Coarse expressions were used most frequently by 1331 times in total and 16.33 times per 10 minutes. Lewd expressions were used most less frequently by 13 times in total and 0.12 time per 10 minutes. This shows that there are serious problems with expressions used in television dramas. When assorting the language misuses by broadcasting companies, we can find that terrestial broadcasting companies used low-dignity words 2514 times in total and 24.16 times per 10 minutes, while general programming TV channels used them 1550 times in total and 23.80 times per 10 minutes. When they were divided to broadcasting companies, KBS was 646 times in total, 5.66 times per 10 minutes; SBS was 898 times in total, 8.55 times per 10 minutes; MBC was 970 times in total, 9.95 times per 10 minutes; iii MBN was 540 times in total, 10.46 times per 10 minutes; JTBC was 324 times in total 5.17 times per 10 minutes; TV Chosun was 341 times in total, 3.64 times per 10 minutes, and Channel A was 345 times in total, 4.53 times per 10 minutes.
